In 2021, Cintecx resumed part of its face-to-pace activities, being one of the most significant Open Days that are carried out under the disseminating unique science” program, a program whose main objective is the dissemination of science and technology to society by different unique centers of the University of Vigo.
Students from Compañía de María of Vigo and El Castro British International School inaugurated these open days in 2021.
Students from the last year of High School of Excellence in Science and Technology (STEAMbach) from these two schools visited our center in the months of October and December 2021.
During these visits, they were able to participate in various very practical workshops designed specifically from them and that allow them to get closer to the important work carried out by the center and to understand how technology helps to achieve an industrial and sustainable society committed to the conservation of the planet.
‘CASTRO BRITISH SCHOOL’ – Friday 10 de December de 2021

10:10-11:45. Combustion: the science games artificial intelligence: once upon a time there was a world of data. Raquel Orozco, Ana Larrañaga & Javier Martínez Torres.
Travel to CINTECX
12:00- 12:35. Interactive talk biomedical engineering – biomaterials. Laura González, Sara Pérez & Julia Serra.
12:40-13:15. Electrolysis experiment. Ramón Novoa & Aránzazu Pintos.
13:20-14:15. Beginning of crossed talks: students are divides into 2 groups.
13:20-14:15. Conservation Street art & materials workshop. Iago Pozo, María Pazo & Xurxo Rigueira.
13:20-14:15. Sustainable development and biotechnology. Ángeles Sanromán, Marta Pazos, Silvia Escudeiro & Aida Díez.
Activities
INTERACTIVE TALK BIOMEDICAL – BIOMATERIALS
Exhibitor equipped with biomaterials and biomedical devices. The activity is made in an expository way where students can learn by manipulating the different biomedical devices.
VISUAL EXPERIMENT. ELECTROLYSIS
Electrolysis of a solution with indicators added. Anode and cathode are in different compartments, so the color of the compartment varies depending on the direction of current flow.
STREET ART CONSERVATION
In this activity we will talk about the latest techniques used for the extraction of dyes, going though laser and biological techniques, without forgetting the need to respect our built heritage. In addition, the latest concerns at Europe level focused on the conversation of murals that constitute current street art will be discussed.
THE FEVER OF MATERIALS
Materials are very important in all areas of life and the development of new materials is closely linked to the progress and evolution of society. Therefore, it is important to know the properties offered by the different types of materials. This module presents examples of the different materials: ceramics, metals, polymers and composite materials, highlighting the properties that each one of them has and different curiosities of their use. As an example: generation of a foam through polymerization, effect of shape memory in metals and polymers, the use of iron as Cu recovery tool and the behavior of hydrophobic materials.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
Proposal associated with sustainable development and biotechnology. Experience in which students will carry out the treatment of colored water using adsorbents produced from waste and principles of biotechnology (microorganism enzymes) will also be given.
COMBUSTION: THE SCI-ENCE GAMES
A series of very visual practical experiences are carried out so that the students learn the basic notions of combustion. From the simplest (how to produce D-2 reagents, products, etc…) to its application to complex and real systems such as combustion engines, power generation plants, etc. Concepts such energy, power, turbulence, chemical kinetics, etc, are worked on. All this with the participation of the students.
Artificial intelligence: once upon a world of data
Can a computer make intelligent decisions? But… What is an intelligent decision? Artificial Intelligence has taken on a significant role in recent years and today it is part of many areas in our lives, normalizing the fact that a machine can play with us or understanding what we speak. With this workshop, attendees will be shown the usefulness and potential that these techniques can bring to our society, interactively showing their application in the world of engineering. Attendees will solve an artificial vision problem by themselves and will learn the importance of data collection to reach the goal, developing their resolution capacity and imagination. In a world driven by information, what better way to penetrate it?
