CINTECX Calendar: July with Mercedes Solla

“With passion and determination, it can be achieved.”

I research the use of ground-penetrating radar to detect and assess pathologies in critical transport infrastructure, such as roads and bridges. In addition, I develop automation methodologies for data processing and interpretation, integrating them with other non-destructive techniques to make inspections more reliable, faster, and more accurate. Research allows me to innovate and stay in constant evolution.

I didn’t have female scientific role models during my childhood. My role models were the brave and hardworking women in my everyday life, like my mother and my grandmothers. They taught me that effort and perseverance are essential to achieving my dreams.

My goal is to improve the safety and sustainability of transport infrastructure, extending its lifespan and reducing maintenance costs, thereby contributing to society’s well-being by ensuring safer transport systems.

To young girls, I would say: believe in yourselves and your abilities, and fight for your dreams. I would tell them about successful women scientists so they can identify with them and see that it is possible to succeed in science while leading a normal life. It’s important to motivate them and to combat false stereotypes about scientific careers.
