X-ray Diffraction Training Course: Basic Concepts
May 26 @ 15:30 - May 27 @ 18:00

From CINTECX we have launched a new training course on the basic concepts of X-ray diffraction.
The training will be held in the CINTECX Auditorium on the following dates:
- Monday 26/05/2025, from 15:30 to 18:30
- Tuesday 27/05/2025, from 15:30 to 18:30
The course will be taught by Dr. Bruno Dacuña Mariño, Senior Research Support Technician of the X-Ray Unit / Crystalline Powder Section, Network of Infrastructures for Research and Technological Development Support (RIAIDT), University of Santiago de Compostela, and will consist of the following sections:
- Geometric description (position of diffracted X-rays)
- Thomas Young’s experiment: 1801; why X-rays?
- Laue and Bragg equations; Ewald construction: reciprocal space
- Data collection (polycrystals and single crystals)
- Definition of crystal; Unit cell; Indexation
- Symmetry; Point and space groups; International tables
- Diffraction experiments (intensity of diffracted X-rays)
- X-rays interact with matter
- Obtaining X-rays
- X-rays with electrons and atoms
- X-rays with crystals: structure factor
- Phase problem: Fourier series
- Properties of the structure factor
- Examples:
- Identification of minerals
- Crystallinity
- Microstructure and microcrystallinity analysis
- High-resolution diffraction
- Solid solutions
- Liquid crystals
